Have you ever wondered how much hummus weighs? It seems like a pretty dense food, and with a large amount of it, it could end up weighing quite a bit. The most hummus has ever weighed, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, is over four tons or about the same weight as four average sized cars. If you are looking for recipes with hummus spread in them you should plan on your dish being a little heavier than normal.

Recipes with hummus dip have grown in popularity over the years. The people might believe that recipes with hummus have originated in the United States could be surprised to find out that they are wrong. Hummus originated in Lebanon. In October of 2008 hummus was declared a uniquely Lebanese food because the Association of Lebanese Industrialists petitioned the Lebanese Ministry of Economy and Trade for protected status from the European Commission.

Although Lebanon has attempted to claim recipes with hummus and the hummus dips as their own, there are other countries that have presented various forms of tahini hummus dip. Countries like, Palestine, Egypt, Yemen, Syria and Israel have all created various types of hummus that have become popular in those countries and on some occasions, here in the United States.

Hummus was a 5 million dollar business led by only a smattering of companies just 15 years ago. Today it dominates the refrigerated flavored spreads category, according to some market researchers at the Symphony IRI Group. The amount of people that are beginning to eat and serve hummus is growing at a rapid rate within the United States. With the health food kick, recipes with hummus have also grown in popularity.

Foodies might be surprised to find out that while hummus has jumped in popularity recently, the dish as actually introduced to the United States about forty years ago. It took quite some time and some flavor tweaking for hummus to grow in popularity in the United States. It goes without saying that Americans really love their flavor varieties!

    I had no idea hummus had been around for so long! I have began ordering it as an appetizer when I go out to dinner because there are a lot more restaurants offering it. It is a nice option that is healthy and less guilt free than other options!

    That is so true! Even chain restaurants that are not known for being especially healthy have begun to offer hummus as an option. It is a great and healthy option and the varieties of flavors have made hummus much more appealing.
