In any town, city, state, or country, there are a few things that are universal. A smile is considered a known gesture in any land, and mathematics has also been credited for spanning across cultures. Signage is another well-known universal element that has been used for centuries for many different reasons.
The earliest signs indicated distance, and were used as milestones by the Romans. They built stone columns throughout the empire that gave the distance to Rome. Later on, the Middle Ages saw the beginnings of signs that gave directions to various cities and towns, and the Hollywood sign, which originally read “HOLLYWOODLAND,” was erected in the early 1900s to advertise a new housing community.
