Hummus has recently become one of Americans’ favorite foods. Hummus, thought to originate sometime in 13th century Egypt, is the shortened version of the Arabic “hummus bi tahina”, meaning chickpeas and tahini. Tahini paste is a central ingredient in many hummus dips, made mostly from sesame seeds.

One of the main reasons for the popularity of hummus is its nutritional value. Consider, chickpeas are a good source of protein and dietary fiber. Tahini is known to be a quality source of the amino acid methionine, a bio-chemical known for burning fat and aiding digestive function. Prepared hummus, while delicious and full of vitamins, is also relatively low in calories and carbohydrates, and it contains no saturated fat or cholesterol. Each tablespoon serving has only 25 calories and 2g of carbs, making th
